Since first opening its doors in the early 1960’s, Neptune has produced hundreds of outstanding and remarkable productions, telling stories of our region and beyond. Celebrating 55 years of operations in 2017-2018, Neptune Theatre is the largest professional theatre in Atlantic Canada. Neptune stages more than 300 performances annually, appealing to a wide variety of audiences and diverse communities, and attracting approximately 80,000 people to its productions and educational programs. The current season is Neptune’s most expansive season to date, with six main stage productions in Fountain Hall, five studio productions on the Scotiabank Stage, plus four bonus features. With an enduring mission to inspire its audiences with great stories, Neptune has a vision as a cultural organization that enriches the community across the Atlantic Region, earning a national reputation through artistic and creative excellence in programming and in practice of its craft.
As the Artistic Director, you will report directly to the Board of Directors, while working closely with the General Manager, and will be accountable for the quality and success of the artistic aspects of the Theatre. Drawing on your creativity and artistic vision, you will guide the development of Neptune’s programs, and select and direct play productions. Promoting innovation and diversity, you will be responsible for programming a wide range of productions that entertain, challenge, and educate a variety of audiences. As an ambassador for Neptune, you will actively engage the artistic and the broader community, and collaborate with other theatres in the region and across Canada, acting as the face of the Theatre. Your priorities will include developing and fostering relationships with donors, sponsors, and key government funders while promoting the Foundation; interacting, engaging, and communicating clearly with the Board of Directors; and along with the General Manager, ensuring financial stability and ensuring fiscal responsibility of the organization.
As the ideal candidate, you have demonstrated the capacity for developing outstanding theatre and artistic leadership, a passion for innovation and creativity, and knowledge of a vast network of theatre professionals gained through your engagement and collaboration with diverse theatres. You bring a distinguished record of experience in developing programming and directing, a deep commitment to the artistic plan and vision, and insight into the changing demographics and interests of existing as well as potential theatre audiences. You are passionate about, and gain energy from, engaging others within the artistic and local communities, with funders and partners, and most importantly, with audiences. You lead with a collegial approach, and appreciate and understand the operational and business aspects of Theatre.
Neptune Theatre is Atlantic Canada’s largest professional regional theatre. Our performances run September-May, with productions like West Side Story and The Wizard of Oz.
Each year, the playbill includes a broad range of theatrical experiences, from musicals to world and Canadian premieres, to dramas and popular comedies.
Neptune Theatre is also home to a year-round Theatre School, which runs classes, camps and workshops for people of all ages. Neptune Theatre School also coordinates two elite training programs, the Youth Production Company and the Pre-Professional Training Program, which give aspiring local actors an opportunity to work with and learn from the region’s top artistic talent.
