Opportunity to join Toronto Outdoor Picture Show's Board of Directors

Toronto Outdoor Picture Show (TOPS) is a local charitable organization dedicated to sharing high quality, diverse, and accessible outdoor cinema with Toronto communities. Incorporated as a not-for-profit in 2015, and as a registered charitable organization in 2020, TOPS stems from the long-standing Christie Pits Film Festival (CPFF), Toronto’s largest public outdoor film festival, which began in 2011.

With its diverse selection of films and its emphasis on communal experience, TOPS aims to nurture cinephilia and enrich Toronto’s outdoor spaces. In 2022, TOPS celebrated its return to four Toronto neighbourhoods, with a summer season of programming that took place at Christie Pits Park, Fort York, Corktown Common, and Bell Manor Park, welcoming its largest total audience numbers in its history.

TOPS now seeks to fill vacant Board of Directors positions in February, 2023, to help guide the organization as it seeks to improve its sustainability. TOPS expects its directors to be a working board, supporting the work of its small staff while providing strategic oversight. In return, Board members will have the opportunity to build new skills, grow their networks within the nonprofit arts space, and influence a beloved Toronto summer tradition.

The Board and voting members are interested in hearing from all candidates who would bring excellent skills and experience to the organization. Areas of particular need are:
  • Fundraising experience, particularly with foundations or corporate donors
  • Charitable law
  • Non-profit/charitable financial management (book-keeping or CPA)
  • Board governance
  • Human Resources management
We expect to invite approximately six candidates to join the Board of Directors, including a co-Chair role. In addition to the above priorities, we are also interested in hearing from candidates without these particular areas of expertise who are enthusiastic about supporting local arts and culture, or who have a demonstrated prior commitment to TOPS’ mandate.

TOPS is committed to welcoming more diverse voices to our leadership and operations. As part of this commitment, candidates from underserved communities, including but not limited to queer and trans folk, BIPOC individuals, people with disabilities, and others with the skills and knowledge to productively engage with and represent diverse communities will be prioritized. We encourage applicants from these communities to self-identify in their applications.

Please note that the TOPS Board of Directors and Committees have held their meetings over zoom since March 13, 2020. The Board hopes to soon have in-person meetings, if all participants feel comfortable doing so. However, in-person attendance and support at outdoor events throughout the summer is crucial for this role. If you have accessibility concerns on this matter, please feel free to discuss this in your application.

Additionally, no remuneration can legally be provided for service on a charitable Board of Directors, though reimbursement for expenses and additional services may be provided, subject to approval. In keeping with its Conflict of Interest policy, TOPS does not curate the artwork of current Board Directors or staff, or other non-arm’s length individuals.

Board of Directors - Roles & Responsibilities:
  • Act as an ambassador for the festival, increasing its audience and diversity, and promoting its mandate
  • Help to identify and secure new funding sources (private and public), in concert with fundraising staff
  • Contribute to the organization's “giving and getting” individual fundraising campaigns
  • Attend Board meetings (~9/year), contributing to organizational governance as well as to at least one Board working committee supporting ongoing organizational development
  • Support the work of the Founder, Artistic & Executive Director; advise and assist the festival staff where needed (including onsite at events, with helping hands), and take initiative where appropriate
  • Commit approximately 10 hours per month of individual and collaborative work outside of the festival season (project dependent)
  • Over the summer season, Directors are expected to lend support at approximately half of the organization's screenings (approximately a 40-hour commitment over a 2.5-month period)
  • Much of TOPS' communication between executive staff and the Board is by email, and therefore Directors are expected to be responsive and have good communication skills
  • Director commitments are for two-year terms, beginning at each February's AGM, with the possibility of renewal on a case-by-case basis
  • Directors and staff are expected to have up to date vaccinations
