Last year we took the Starting a Creative Business workshops on the road, to approximately 20 communities in Ontario including, Owen Sound, Kingston and        Neyaashiinigmiing Indigenous reserve.

Starting a Creative Business (now part of the CreativeBoost program and renamed, Countdown to Business) is a workshop for aspiring entrepreneurs of various arts and creative disciplines, looking to clarify their creative business ideas and develop a framework for their business plan. We delivered these workshops to over 300 creatives and since we presented these workshops many attendees have established their businesses.

One of our successful attendees is Raheel Patel who joined us for the Mississauga workshop for visual artists. Raheel is an experimental visual artist, graphic designer and independent museum curator. “I call myself a versatile artist. I have also done a lot of research on different craft practices in India and sourced out many traditional crafts from villages in India.”

Raheel immigrated to Canada in 2014 and enrolled in the Culture and Heritage Management program at Centennial College. Because of difficulties finding a job that required expertise in South Asian heritage, art and culture, he opted to create his own work, to serve his community and contribute to Canada’s awareness of his heritage.

In a conversation with Raheel, he explained that the Starting a Creative Business workshop was helpful in shaping his ideas and identifying the “plus and minus points for doing business.” After working to meet his SMART goals, a key learning area of the workshop, he set up Holy Cow Studio to retail rare crafts and wearable arts and conduct workshops on traditional South Asian craft practices.

WorkInCulture advocates for artists, creatives and cultural workers, by not only providing learning opportunities but also supporting their work. Raheel’s art pictured above is one of the images featured on our newly branded thank you cards.

You can learn more and support Raheel’s work by visiting www.Raheelpatel.com

If you’re interested in career development and entrepreneurial and business skill training, we will be piloting a follow-up workshop called CreativeBoost: Launch Your Business. Check out upcoming WorkInCulture programming
