Gwaandak Theatre
“One meaning of “Gwaandak” in the Gwich’in language is “storyteller”.

Gwaandak Theatre, the Yukon’s only Indigenous theatre company, was founded in Whitehorse in 1999 by theatre artists Leonard Linklater and Patti Flather.
Gwaandak Theatre’s vision is to illuminate Indigenous and Northern stories around the world.

Our stories question, honour, and celebrate. They explore themes around decolonization, cultural identity, social justice, underrepresented voices and human rights. We tour to both tiny communities and major centres, and provide comprehensive study guides for secondary schools and colleges.

Gwaandak Theatre develops, produces and tours plays for both youth and adults. Our programming also includes new play workshops, readings and training for theatre artists.

Job Description

35 hours/week

Working in a collaborative team, the Artistic Director leads and implements Gwaandak Theatre’s artistic vision. This person is directly involved with both artistic and administrative tasks, including but not limited to artistic program planning and delivery, grant-writing, fundraising, outreach, artistic visioning, marketing visioning, and general assistance in realization of Gwaandak’s strategic plan.

The Artistic Director works alongside a full-time Managing Director who leads the theatre’s administrative, financial and managerial areas, and an Artistic Producer.



Requirements:

Key responsibilities include:

Artistic

  • Lead artistic discussions around season planning, artistic visioning and project development

  • Build, finalize and update the artistic season over a 3-year cycle in keeping with the company’s vision and mission statement and given resources

  • Lead artistic teams in the creation of new work

  • Proactively seek new scripts and performance works by Indigenous and Northern artists for development or production, including from established, young and emerging artists that reflect Indigenous and Northern stories in Canada

Representation

  • Act as an artistic ambassador of Gwaandak Theatre at the regional, national and/or international level

Administration & Financial Management

  • Take a leadership role in strategic planning with other staff and Board of Directors

  • Play an active role in securing funding, including: writing grant applications; making sponsorship and donation requests for artistic programming

  • Work cooperatively with the Managing Director to achieve a balanced budget each year

Marketing Visioning

  • Participate in developing strategies and setting marketing goals with the Artistic Producer, Managing Director and Marketing Coordinator for company, production and special event marketing and promotion plans (including branding, approach and review of marketing materials)
