The Japanese Paper Place

The Japanese Paper Place in Toronto imports, converts and distributes Japanese paper and related items around the world. Our mission for 40 years has been to encourage creativity through the sale of these versatile, greatly varied, endangered papers both hand and machine-made. Through education via workshops, exhibitions and special events, we honour the papermakers and the many artists who use them. The company attracts creative staff and customers alike who understand the potential of the paper and the importance of sales in growing the business to support the industry in Japan.

 



Job Description

As part of a small sales-focused art-interested team, you will work towards sales goals in selling hand and machine-made paper and related products to reach commissions and bonuses as follows:

KEY DUTIES

  • maintaining and developing relationships with some existing customers primarily in North America via correspondence, sampling and face-to-face visits (30% of time). Many of these are resellers in the Art Supplies, Museum Stores and Fine Gift Shop sectors.
  • searching for and developing new accounts in markets such as creative manufacturing, packaging, printing and home decor (50% of time).
  • handling some retail sales from customers online and who come by our showroom (20% of time).


Requirements:

ESSENTIAL QUALIFICATIONS

  • successful experience in a B2B sales setting and/or retail environment
  • excellent interpersonal and communication skills
  • willingness to listen and learn and openly share ideas with colleagues and at meetings
  • personal enthusiasm for visual art and art materials
  • consistent self-directed work ethic, flexibility
  • a positive and solutions-oriented attitude
  • computer savvy including negotiating and optimizing a product database (FileMaker Pro on Mac especially)

  • familiarity with usage of Japanese paper, especially for printmaking
  • love of travel, interest in other cultures and enthusiastic comfort with trade shows and presentations.
