Music at the Towers

Music at the Towers Children’s Orchestra Program is seeking an enthusiastic and creative individual for the position of part-time Associate Director/Conductor, starting with a paid Trainee period of two years culminating in the appointment to the Executive Director position.

If it is your dream to share your talents and love of music with children and their families and to continue building a strong foundation for orchestral performance in the community, this position will offer an exciting and rewarding opportunity for you.

Based in Brampton, Ontario, our friendly and welcoming environment will allow you participate in program planning, class and private teaching, while introducing this art to local families of diverse ethnicities, and their children. As trainee you will collaborate with the Artistic Director in planning and managing all aspects of the program, with the support of an H. R. /Administrative Assistant, and Board of Directors, and assume responsibility for at least one major aspect of the program.

The Associate Director reports to the Artistic Director and participates in managing all daily operations. In addition to teaching classes 4 hours per week, some private lessons may be required for 30 or 45 minutes per assigned student, per week. The position commences August 15, 2019.

About Music at the Towers

MUSIC AT THE TOWERS is a non-profit, string orchestra program for Brampton children, ages 6 to 14. MATT offers beginning level instrument training on violin, viola, cello and bass in weekly orchestra classes for all students and Bi-monthly private instruction for every student.

Now in its eighth season, Music at the Towers is seen as a valuable bridge connecting many different ethnicities, cultures and income levels, by providing affordable, subsidized music lessons for children, some who are only able to participate because of the highly subsidized music curriculum. MATT has a very high because of the benefits clearly seen by the parents with the added benefits of building character, self-confidence and co-operation skills among the children, as they share in each other’s musical learning.

MATT’s contribution to the community has been recognized in 2013, 2015 and 2018 with Ontario Trillium Foundation Grants; in 2015 with a TDmusicounts and in 2016, 2018, and 2019 with Community Grants by the City of Brampton.


 


Job Description

Job Responsibilities

  • Conduct and/or designate/supervise the conducting of weekly classes in four levels of proficiency, from Beginner level to Auditioned Advanced Ensemble
  • Teach and/or designate the teaching of bi-weekly private lessons
  • Plan classes with staff to ensure performance readiness
  • Select or designate/approve in advance, selection of music for the various levels, to offer a challenge, while ensuring an enjoyable performance/ feeling of success for students
  • Plan and organize at least three concerts and other regular events in the community
  • Work closely with our Board of Directors to ensure : “adequate annual and long term funding for the MATT program, by soliciting government grants, corporate sponsorships and individual donors.”
  • Promote/assist our program, where possible, with marketing and recruiting efforts
  • Transpose/arrange music as needed to ensure violin, viola, cello and contrabass lines are in line with the skills and capabilities of the players
  • Work with HR/Admin to set up annual calendar, private lesson schedules, Board support and volunteer requirements for performances and events


Requirements:

Required Qualifications:

  • Minimum: Bachelor’s Degree in Music Performance or Music Education/or equivalent
  • Advanced expertise and training on one string instrument (violin, viola, cello, or double bass) and at least one year of training and experience on all others
  • Conducting experience/familiarity with beginning level string music repertoire and sources
  • Familiarity with musical instrument digital interfaces and editing software
  • Creative thinking to encourage and motivate the children’s performance abilities
  • The ability to organize effectively and meet deadlines
  • Good interpersonal and communication skills
  • A willingness to work closely with Board of Directors
  • Assume an active leadership role within the program and function as an ambassador to the community
  • Availability for after school classes and lessons; flexibility for concerts and special events at other times

This is a 2-year trainee position, starting with 3 – month probation, during which the Executive Director / Board of Directors evaluate the candidate’s performance. Assuming success in the probationary period, monitoring will continue until attaining the Executive Director role within 2 years from the beginning of the contract. All materials submitted will be held in confidence.. Approved applicants will be invited for interview.
