The contract period is from March 11, 2019 - March 15, 2019, with one additional evening of training the week prior.

Job Summary:
Flato Markham Theatre operates four camps which run concurrently. Junior Stars Camp for ages 6-9, Drama Camp for ages 9-13, Kinder Theatre Camp for ages 4-5, and Performing Arts Camps at Cornerstone Centre for ages 6-13.

The Junior Stars and Drama Camp programs work individually and in cooperation to rehearse and perform a play that is specifically written for children. The session is one week and culminates with a performance on Thursday evening. Kinder Theatre Camp has a performance on Friday afternoon, during regular camp hours. Performing Arts Camp happens at Cornerstone Centre and has a performance on Friday afternoon.

Job Description:
Supervises a group of campers in one of the Markham Theatre’s March Break Camps with responsibilities including facilitating activity plans, program delivery and administration.

Through effective leadership and programming, enables children and youth to develop skills, make friends, socialize and build self-esteem. Accountable for the well-being of a group of campers under the guidance of the Camp Coordinator, Artistic Director, Director team, and Supervisors, ensuring camp activities are safe, educational, inclusive, high quality and meet the Theatre overall goals and standards.

Requirements:

Job Duties & Responsibilities:
  • Facilitates daily camp activities such as, games, dance, mime, clown, improvisation, theatrical themed activities.
  • Helps to ensure programming is adapted to camper needs with regards to safety, hygiene, weather, breaks etc.
  • Promptly reports absences to the Artistic Director, maintains ratios and completes headcounts according to City Camp Policies and Procedures.
  • Delivers activity plans as written and approved by the Discovery Program Coordinator and Camp Artistic Director.
  • Ensures lessons have been reviewed and ready to be presented to the campers prior to the program delivery.
  • Participates in the delivery of the before and after care program.
  • Prioritizes child well-being, safety and protection throughout the camp. Evaluates situations for potential risks to the safety, protection and well-being of campers and staff, proactively taking mitigating actions to address such risks.
  • Serves as a liaison with parents of campers, reinforcing City of Markham customer service, diversity and inclusion (special needs, ethno-cultural, English as second language, socio-economic).
  • Prepares and organizes program equipment and supplies, reporting any inventory shortages to the Program Director.
  • Demonstrates the confidence and ability to make decisions independently of peers and in the best interests of the campers. Resolves problems and conflicts effectively as they arise.
  • Ensures all participants are aware of upcoming events and schedule changes.
  • Organizes and assists with set-up and clean-up of camp events, activities and programs.
  • Follows City of Markham policies and procedures in program activities.
  • Maintains positive, constructive relationships with camp staff and volunteers with the goal of meeting camper needs. Works with inclusion staff as needed to ensure all campers are able to participate.
  • Coaches and mentors volunteers and campers.
  • Provides regular updates and feedback to the Program Director.
  • Participates in orientation and training sessions, supporting the Artistic Director and Discovery Coordinator where necessary.
  • Attends and participates in staff meetings.
  • Other duties as required.
Requirements:
  • Minimum Age: 16.
  • Education: Currently enrolled in a secondary or post-secondary institution. Courses related to performing arts are an asset.
  • Experience: Experience working with children; knowledge of child development; previous experience in a live performance setting is an asset; experience in a leadership capacity is an asset i.e. Student council member, leadership role on youth council, previous experience as a camp counsellor is an asset; completion of a counsellor-in-training/leader-in-training program would be an asset.
  • Licenses/Certifications: Current Standard First Aid with CPR ‘C’ required; HIGH FIVE Healthy Child Development is required; Crisis Prevention Intervention (CPI) is an asset.
