Tafelmusik

Led by Music Director Elisa Citterio, Tafelmusik is one of the world’s leading period-instrument ensembles, performing on instruments and in styles appropriate for the era of the music. Renowned for dynamic, engaging, and soulful performances, Tafelmusik performs some 80 concerts each year for audiences across Toronto, and is Canada’s most toured orchestra, having performed in more than 350 cities in 32 countries. The orchestra is often joined by the critically acclaimed Tafelmusik Chamber Choir and its director, Ivars Taurins.
 
Tafelmusik also seeks to transport audiences to the baroque and classical periods through insightful multimedia programs and adventurous cross-cultural collaborations. Our musicians share their knowledge and experience through comprehensive education and artist-training initiatives such as the Tafelmusik Baroque Summer and Winter Institutes. Tafelmusik’s recordings on the Sony, CBC Records, Analekta, and Tafelmusik Media labels have garnered ten JUNOs and numerous international recording prizes.
 
 



Job Description

JOB DESCRIPTION
As concert usher, you are expected to assist the Front of House Manager in concert-related duties, and work closely with Tafelmusik volunteers and staff. Ushers are responsible for proper set up and strike of signage and chairs, dissemination of programs, and to provide warm and professional assistance to patrons as they enter, enjoy, and depart the performance.
 

Requirements:

RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Set up and strike of concert related materials before and after the performance
  • Set up and strike of pre-concert chat 
  • Ticket scanning and assisting with patrons with wayfinding and seating issues
  • Resolution and de-escalation of customer service issues
  • Assist volunteers as needed, ensure programs and other materials are handed out
  • Receive patrons and monitor pre-concert chat
  • Coordinate late entrances to performances
  • Monitor inside of house during the performance
  • Monitor various areas during intermission
 QUALIFICATIONS
Essential:
  • Proven ability to work effectively with minimal supervision
  • Ability to lift and carry items up to 35lbs
  • Ability to stand for long periods and climb stairs.
  • First aid certification
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced environment with dynamic conditions such as loud noise, high elevation, dimness or absence of light
  • Ability to bend, stretch, reach and kneel without restriction.
  • Ability to communicate effectively in English.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills and able to interact effectively with a wide variety of personalities and situations requiring diplomacy, tact, friendliness, poise and firmness
  • Demonstrate an understanding of, sensitivity to, and appreciation for the cultural, socio-economic, disability, and gender diversity of patrons, staff, and volunteers attending or working with Tafelmusik
  • Maintain a professional, polished and well-groomed appearance
  • Proof of eligibility to work in Canada
 
Desired:
  • Previous work experience in a Front of House
  • Smart Serve certification
  • Knowledge of classical music & the performing arts scene in the GTA
  • Ability to communicate in French and other languages
  • Affection for church cat

TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT

• A paid training with Manager of Customer Experience & Front of House Manager will be scheduled before October 16th 
• Must be able to commit to a full season, dates as followed (hours are approximated):
 
October 16, 17, 18, 19, 20 (25 hours)
November 14, 15, 16, 17 (20 hours)
December 4, 5, 6, 7, 8 (25 hours)
Jan 11 (5 hours)
Jan 16, 17, 18, 19 (20 hours)
Jan 25 (5 hours)
Feb 6, 7, 8, 9 (20 hours)
Feb 27, 28, 29 – Mar 1 (20 hours)
March 4 – March 5 (10 hours)
Apr 22- Apr 26 (25 hours)
June 1 (5 hours)
 
Shifts are generally 5 hours, mostly in the evening and Sunday afternoons. Approximated average of 25 hours per month. Additional dates may be available throughout the season as needs arise.
 
Rate: $18.00 per hour – invoiced after each program run
Start Date: October 1st 2019
