Hot Docs Canadian International Documentary Festival

Hot Docs is a not-for-profit organization that aims to advance and celebrate the art of documentary, and create production opportunities for documentary filmmakers.

Held in Toronto each spring, Hot Docs Canadian International Documentary Festival is North America’s largest documentary festival, conference and market. Each year, the Festival presents approximately 200 Canadian and international films to audiences exceeding 220,000. For documentary professionals, we offer a dynamic slate of industry events and initiatives, including Hot Docs Forum, as well as a full roster of professional development opportunities. The 27th annual Festival will take place April 30–May 10, 2020.

Hot Docs also owns the Hot Docs Ted Rogers Cinema, a 650-seat, century-old screening venue in Toronto, that is a year-round home for Canadian and international documentaries.

Additionally, Hot Docs is the event organizer for the annual World Congress of Science and Factual Producers, a member-run conference for science and factual producers, broadcasters and content providers from around the world.

Job Description

The Development Manager of Public Affairs is responsible for pursuing public sector and related funding opportunities that strategically benefit the organization. They are responsible for developing the organization’s Government Relations Strategy, and ensuring its successful implementation through researching and sourcing funding opportunities, overseeing the grant applications and cycles, and maintaining positive working relationships with representative stakeholders from all levels of government.
  • Research and identify new funding opportunities;
  • Manage the complete grant cycle process, from writing complex, high quality grant applications, draft budgets and proposals to managing the submission and follow-up, with an aim of raising approximately $1.5 million annually;
  • Lead the team through the complete reporting process, ensuring all reports are completed accurately and in a timely manner;
  • Prepare budgets, track project expenses and liaise with auditors for project audits;
  • Initiate and maintain positive relationships with key partners;
  • Draft and oversee the implementation of Hot Docs’ Government Relations Strategy;
  • Manage grant projects to ensure deliverables and timelines are met;
  • Build relationships, organize outreach and information sharing meetings, and collaborate with government stakeholders and other key representatives;
  • Provide support to an organizational capital campaign in reaching government contribution targets.
This is an 18-month contract with an opportunity for renewal, working from Hot Docs main offices.


  • 5+ years experience working in not-for-profit fundraising, festival or event fundraising or other relevant professional experience; related degrees are an asset;
  • Significant experience in writing successful grants, especially government, proposals;
  • Demonstrated ability to work with complex budgets, and financial reporting;
  • Strong proficiency in MS Word, Excel, and PowerPoint;
  • Proficiency and experience with Salesforce databases is an asset;
  • Working knowledge of the Canadian film and television industry is an asset;
  • Sound knowledge of fundraising theory and strategies;
  • Excellent communication skills, both written and oral;
  • Ability to work independently and to respond efficiently to changing workflow needs;
  • Ability to work to tight timelines and in a time-pressured schedule;
  • Adaptable to a flexible work schedule including some evenings and weekends.
