The NSO has been entertaining Niagara since 1948 participating in events throughout the Region from summer concerts along the wine route featuring Canadian artists such as Chantal Kreviazuk, Adam Cohen, Royal Wood & Sarah Slean to wowing the crowd on the water at Welland’s annual Illuminaqua and celebrating Canada Day in St. Catharines’ Market Square. The Niagara Symphony Orchestra (NSO) brings inspiration and excitement to the Region’s arts and culture scene through our awe-inspiring 52-member orchestra. With performances for all audiences, we aim to enrich, entertain and educate.



Job Description

The Niagara Symphony Association in St. Catharines, Ontario, Canada is pleased to invite applications for the position of Education & Outreach Coordinator.
 
The Niagara Symphony Association (NSO) supports one of the oldest orchestras and music education summer camps in the Province of Ontario.  Incorporated in 1948, the Symphony recently celebrated its 70th anniversary and is a 52 member fully professional per service orchestra with 50% of the musicians residing in the Niagara Region.  The regular concert season is held in the FirstOntario Performing Arts Centre, a new hall which opened in 2015 in downtown St. Catharines.  Programming is traditionally comprised of seven Masterworks and four POPS! concerts plus a three-concert Family Series. Notably, the NSO has reached a new level of artistic excellence since moving to the new hall, showcasing challenging repertoire and introducing new Canadian guest artists to Niagara audiences.  The subscription base has doubled, with attendance nearing 80 % capacity and the orchestra operates a comprehensive series of outreach and educational programming.  For further information on the Niagara Symphony Orchestra, please visit www.niagarasymphony.com
 
The Education & Outreach Coordinator (part time) reports directly to the Executive Director, and has specific responsibility for all administrative aspects of the Niagara Symphony Orchestra’s Education and Outreach programming, including Summer Music Camp and The Academy @ SMC, The Arts & Minds Wind Trio tour, NSO Youth Club and Spotlight On!.  This position coordinates master classes, workshops, speaking engagements, community engagement initiatives and open rehearsals and maintains strong relationships with members of the education system, musicians, patrons, local arts organizations, and government agencies. Other responsibilities may include researching new outreach projects; maintaining and reporting on budgetary matters; and grant writing in support of education initiatives.
 
This employee position is varied: based on 24 hours per week, or the equivalent, from September to mid-May, and, during Summer Music Camp, 35-40 hours per week for 12 weeks from mid-May to mid-August.

Requirements:

Experience & Qualifications:  The successful candidate will have experience in and/or an understanding of the current Ontario education system, policies and arts curriculum.  Strong research and presentation skills and excellent interpersonal and communication skills are required (both written and verbal).  The ability to write and/or support grant writing and strong computer proficiency are also necessary.  Interest in and knowledge of the not-for-profit arts sector, particularly orchestral music, is an asset.
