All of these are fitting descriptors of MonstrARTity, for when we put on a show, we do it big. We’re talking rockin’ bands playing hit music, backed by a live orchestra alongside a face-meltingly awesome laser show. We’re talking hit Bollywood songs fused with hit Top 40 songs to create the most feel-good beats you’ve ever heard. We’re talking packed venues and tens of thousands of people dancing, singing and screaming for encores. We’re talking monster-sized fun.

Born in 2011, MonstrARTity Creative Community is a not-for-profit organization, based in Mississauga and committed to providing entertainment for the young and old alike. Ever expanding our productions, MonstrARTity is the producer of Bollywood Monster Mashup, which is the largest South Asian festival in Canada, as well as the team behind the award-winning Monster Rock Orchestra act and Monster World Mashup festival, Monster Arts for Youth school workshop program and Monster Artist Development program.

Job Description

MonstrARTity is currently seeking applicants for five summer youth positions:

  1. Choreographer (one position)
  2. Dancer (four positions)

with availability from April 27, 2020 (Choreographer position) and June 1, 2020 (Dancer positions). The total earnings for these positions will range from $2538 -$4512 for the dancer positions and $2538 - $7332 for choreographer position (these numbers are dependent on the amount of hours covered by our funder).

MonstrARTity activities include the following programs:

  1. #BollywoodMonster Mashup (BMM), the largest South Asian festival in Canada;
  2. #MonsterArts for Youth (MAY), a multidisciplinary workshop program with a focus in South Asian arts, provided within Peel Region schools
  3. #MonsterArtist Development (MAD) program, a mentorship and entrepreneurship training program for diverse emerging youth artists. 

MonstrARTity Creative Community (MCC) is a Mississauga-based, not-for-profit arts organization that consistently entertains tens of thousands with its original, innovative and world-class programming. These positions are comprised of a combination of remote work, team conference calls and weekly meetings in Mississauga.



Requirements:

Choreographer

DUTIES

The Choreographer is responsible for leading a small team of dancers. Specific tasks include:

  • Choreographing four original pieces that combine South Asian dance styles and urban dance, to be presented at #BollywoodMonster Mashup
  • Teaching choreographed works to a team of dancers
  • Providing training and mentorship to dancers in both familiar and unfamiliar dance styles
  • Assisting the Programming Consultant with administration duties as needed
  • Supporting all team members with tasks necessary to the organization and the success of events

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Excellent attention to detail, time management skills, team player, self-starter
  • Must reside in the GTA and have access to own laptop or computer
  • Graduated or currently in a professional dance training or university dance program. Alternatively, must have at least 3 years of experience in choreographing professional dance performance pieces
  • Must be actively working in the dance industry as either a performer, instructor or choreographer
  • Must have at least 5 years of experience in teaching dance and/or leading live performance projects
  • Training and professional work experience in South Asian dance styles and urban dance are preferred. Experience in other dance styles is an asset
  • Ability to work with South Asian and urban music from different genres is a must
 

Dancer

DUTIES

Dancers are responsible for taking direction from the Choreographer with the end goal of performing the dance works at #BollywoodMonster Mashup. Specific tasks include:

  • Working with the Choreographer and other dancers to learn four original choreographed routines
  • Receiving and applying training in combining South Asian dance styles and urban dance
  • Completing multiple performances at #BollywoodMonster Mashup
  • Assisting the Programming Consultant and the Choreographer with administration duties as needed
  • Supporting all team members with tasks necessary to the organization and the success of events

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Excellent attention to detail, time management skills, team player, self-starter
  • Must reside in the GTA and have access to own laptop or computer
  • Graduated or currently in a professional dance training or university dance program. Alternatively, must have at least 3 years of experience performing dance in a professional capacity.
  • Must be actively working in the dance industry as a performer
  • Training and professional work experience in South Asian dance styles and urban dance are preferred. Experience in other dance styles is an asset.  
  • Must be open and able to work with South Asian and urban music from different genres


Additional Info:

OUR FUNDER REQUIRES THE FOLLOWING CRITERIA

Individuals must:

  • Be between 15 and 30 years of age at the start of the employment;
  • Be a Canadian citizen, permanent resident, or person to whom refugee protection has been conferred under the Immigration and Refugee Protection Act for the duration of the employment*; and,
  • Have a valid Social Insurance Number at the start of employment and be legally entitled to work in Canada in accordance with relevant provincial or territorial legislation and regulations.

*International students are not eligible participants.

 

DETAILS

  • Earliest start date: April 27, 2020 (choreographer); June 1, 2020 (dancers)
  • Term: April 27 - July 31, 2020 (choreographer); June 1 – July 31, 2020 (dancers)
  • Hours: 30-40 hours/week (TBC)
  • Compensation: $14.10/hour, resulting in total earnings ranging from $2538 -$4512 for the dancer positions and $2538 - $7332 for choreographer position (these numbers are dependent on the amount of hours covered by our funder)
  • Perks: Remote work options and flexible hours
  • Must be able to make mandatory weekly team calls, team meetings in Mississauga and events in Peel Region as required
  • Must be able to regularly attend dance rehearsals in Mississauga or Toronto (TBC) on weekdays as necessary
