Art Canada Institute (ACI) is a not-for-profit research organization based out of Massey College, University of Toronto. The Institute’s mandate is to promote the study of an inclusive, multi-vocal Canadian art history to as broad an audience as possible, in both English and French and internationally.

Job Description
The ACI is seeking a part-time Image Research Associate (IRA). The IRA is a key member of the publishing team responsible for creating the Canadian Online Art Book Library. Each year ACI publishes six online art books (OAB) on the lives and works of significant Canadian artists or thematic works that review a significant period or style in Canadian art history. These books are written by Canadian art historians and scholars and feature high-quality images of artists’ work, along with contextual and archival images. The IRA collaborates with the Author, Senior Image Research Associate, Layout Director, and Managing Editor to ensure the Canadian Online Art Book project is illustrated with the highest quality images possible.

  • Work closely with all stakeholders, including authors, copyright holders, editorial staff, and the ACI’s web team
  • Perform significant research into artists’ oeuvres and archives
  • Maintain highly accurate records of images and correspondence with stakeholders
  • Fact check and organize the information provided by authors, institutions, and collections
  • Liaise with all copyright holders to ensure permissions are granted for each image used
  • Respond within 24 hours to all communication from the ACI team
  • Deliver at key dates an image list, a captions document, and other documents relevant to the ACI publishing process


  • Bachelor degree or higher in Art History, or other relevant discipline
  • Strong knowledge of Canadian Art History
  • Excellent research skills
  • Experience working as a researcher
  • Highly organized, detail focused
  • Ability to multi-task, work on multiple projects at one time
  • Strong communication skills
  • Works well in a virtual office environment
  • Works well in a deadline-oriented environment
