Since 1995, the gallery has become synonymous with great photographs of all types, making it Canada's destination for enjoying original photographs. In addition to an active exhibition schedule, the gallery helps first time buyers, institutions, and collectors of all levels acquire the photographs they desire. We are the primary representative for several estates, as well as leading contemporary photographers and artists. We maintain an inventory of over 30,000 photographs comprised of historical Canadian works, as well as international Modern and Contemporary works that are either documentary in nature or that celebrate the medium. We also have a large selection of trade and limited-edition photography books for sale. We believe there are great photographs to suit every budget and endeavour to provide an inviting atmosphere for finding them.
Job Description
Established commercial photography gallery invites applications for a new full-time position in a busy environment. We are looking for an individual who is a team player with a passion for photography and the arts. Full-time (37.5 hrs/week); Tuesday to Saturday 10 am - 6 pm, plus occasional evening availability.
Responsibilities
- Preparing framing quotes for the sales team
- Archival matting and framing of prints sold at the gallery and for exhibition
- Installing exhibitions
- Inspecting incoming and outgoing inventory
- Safe packaging of prints and books for shipping
- Coordinating shipping and completing customs paperwork
- Assist with collections management
- Supporting all gallery technology and computer systems (Mac and PC); including digital database backup, and being the point of first contact for fixing technical issues
- Responsible for ensuring all equipment is in proper working order
- Gallery maintenance, including changing light bulbs, basic repairs, etc.
Requirements:
- At a minimum, a basic knowledge of photographic processes and history
- Previous matting and framing experience (minimum 1-2 years); ability to use a mat cutter
- Comfortable working with delicate and irreplaceable prints
- Previous experience installing exhibitions
- Experience Coordinating shipping and completing customs paperwork
- Strong knowledge of computer systems and technology (Mac and PC)
- IT experience; the ability to troubleshoot and fix technical problems, install hardware, software and maintain computer networks
- Ability to multi-task and meet strict and competing deadlines
- Excellent organizational skills
- Highly focussed, with great attention to detail
- Self-directed, motivated and capable of working well with others in a small work environment
- Familiarity with technical equipment (projectors, new media, etc.)
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office, Photoshop and collection databases
- Basic design skills
- License to drive a vehicle and comfortable transporting art
