Job Description

Volcano is adding a Producer to our team, who will work part-time (0.3 full-time equivalnet building to 0.6 full-time equivament) exclusively on our upcoming production Scott Joplin’s Treemonisha. This production has a large creative team, cast, and chamber orchestra of majority Black artists from Canada, the US and the UK. The successful candidate will have a demonstrated understanding of racial equity practices, and the specific barriers and challenges experienced by Black theatre artists in Canada. The Producer will work with Volcano’s leadership to create a positive, responsive, and supportive work environment on this large-scale production.
The Producer will be an integral member of Volcano’s small core staff and will help to steward the work through its final rehearsal period, world premiere, and US tour (California, DC), all currently slated to happen in 2022. Throughout this process, the Producer will work alongside Volcano’s Artistic Director, GM/Producer, Associate Producer, and the show’s Production Manager; and will have access to external producing mentors who are Black, Indigenous and/or people of colour.
The Producer will contribute to the following spheres of work on the production:
  • community building and outreach planning;
  • contracting performers;
  • company management including out-of-town artist logistics, including immigration Canada foreign worker permits, housing, and travel;
  • US tour planning and logistics;
  • creating marketing materials for local and international presenters;
  • creating rich social media content related to the production;
  • planning and implementing fundraising strategies to help reach revenue targets;
  • grant proposal writing and preparation;
  • budget tracking, and
  • working with the Treemonisha Impact Team, made up of Black community advisors.


The Producer may tour with the production for 3 weeks in fall 2022 to locations in the USA, so a valid passport and the ability to travel within that timeframe is required.
Ideally, the Producer’s skill set will include:
  • excellent spoken and written communication skills;
  • budgeting;
  • competency in a range of common office and social media applications;
  • deep insights about anti-Black racism and solution-oriented ways to combat it in a professional performing arts work environment; and
  • experience working and travelling with racialized artists.

Additional Info:

The salary for this position is based on a full-time rate of $50,000 p.a.

The Producer position is curently being offered as a part-time position, beginning at 0.3 full-time equivalent (1.5 days per week, $15,000 p.a.) in 20/21 and building to 0.6 full-time equivalent (3 days a week, $30,000 p.a.) at a date to be negotiated post-July 1, 2021 between the successful candidate and Volcano's General Manager.
