Opera Atelier is North America’s premier period opera/ballet company, producing the opera, ballet and drama of the 17th, 18th, and 19th centuries. Job Description

Please note this is a short-term contract position, January to June.
The Production Assistant works closely with the Director of Production to provide technical and administrative support to Opera Atelier’s staff and creative team. The contract includes work on a major opera; education and outreach programming, and promotional events.
Part-time flexible hours will begin early January and conclude in early June, with increased hours as required during tech week. The Production Assistant is required to be present for all load in, tech calls, and strike activities.

Technical Duties
  • Schedule, book, and supervise non-union labour at storage and other locations.
  • Maintain the organization of storage facilities. Track any items rented or borrowed by third parties.
  • Create ground plans, sections, and elevations using AutoCAD.
  • Source, build, or modify set and props.
  • Assist the Head of Wardrobe in pulling costumes.
  • Support the rehearsal process and respond to rehearsal notes.
  • Oversee installation of production elements in an IATSE operated venue.
  • Act as a driver when required, including occasionally transporting props & costumes if required.
  • Perform basic maintenance at the office and studio.
Administrative Duties
  • In cooperation with the Development and Audience Relations departments, maintain information contained within the Customer Relationship Management software.
  • Prepare, file, and track Equity and non-Equity contracts for all temporary workers.
  • Track and reconcile material and labour expenses.
  • Create proper paperwork for crew tracking, load-in, & strike as needed.
  • Produce an archival binder for the production.
Other duties as required.


  • Bachelor’s Degree in theatre production or equivalent experience.
  • 1 - 3 years of experience in professional performing arts. Technical and administrative backgrounds will be considered, but candidate must have a willingness to perform both aspects of this position.
  • Competency in Microsoft Office programs.
  • An understanding of the CAEA Opera Agreement an asset.
  • Experience working in an IATSE operated venue an asset.
  • Full driver’s license preferred.
  • Detail-oriented and highly organized with the ability to multi-task.
  • Strong initiative and self-motivation with excellent problem-solving skills.
  • Ability to be on call for long hours during peak periods.
  • Calm and collected demeanor even in high pressure situations.
  • Proven diplomacy when working with multiple stakeholders. 

Additional Info:

 Contract Compensation: $7,500 total on bi-weekly payment.

As a contract position, the Contractor is responsible for the remittance of any applicable taxes.
