Organization Description

Philip Beesley Architect Inc. & Living Architecture Systems Group

Philip Beesley Architect Inc. (PBAI) and the Living Architecture Systems Group (LASG) bring together pioneering researchers and industry partners from centres across North America and Europe in a highly interdisciplinary research cluster dedicated to developing interdisciplinary working methods, innovative technologies and new critical aesthetics within the emerging field of responsive architecture. “Living Architecture”, as proposed by LASG, is the integration of near-living qualities into our built environment through the interdisciplinary synthesis of technological systems. Applying knowledge from interdisciplinary research, LASG is developing environments that can move, respond, and learn; environments that grow themselves and that are adaptive and empathic toward their inhabitants. This research is influencing how we build architecture by transforming the physical structures that support and enclose buildings, the technical systems that gather information and control our interior environments, and the expressive aesthetics of architecture.
The LASG operates in conjunction with PBAI studio, working in a wide range of projects that include experimental interactive installation and sculpture projects using advanced digital prototyping equipment, as well as traditional architectural developments, graphic design, and exhibitry. The studio is associated with the University of Waterloo, School of Architecture and includes frequent exchanges with students and researchers.  Principals of the studio are professors at the School.   More information on LASG and PBAI can be seen at and
