Hot Docs Canadian International Documentary Festival

Hot Docs is a not-for-profit organization dedicated to advancing and celebrating the art of documentary and to creating production opportunities for documentary filmmakers.

Hot Docs Canadian International Documentary Festival, North America’s largest documentary festival, conference and market, will present its 29th annual edition in April 2022. Year round, Hot Docs supports the Canadian and international industry with professional development programs and a multi-million-dollar production fund portfolio, and fosters education through documentaries with its popular free program Docs For Schools.

Hot Docs owns and programs the Hot Docs Ted Rogers Cinema, a century-old landmark located in Toronto’s Annex neighbourhood and the world’s first and largest documentary cinema. While closed during the current pandemic, Hot Docs is offering audiences across Canada access to first-run documentaries and curated programming and events on its Hot Docs at Home streaming service.

Additionally, Hot Docs is the event organizer for the annual World Congress of Science and Factual Producers, a member-run conference for science and factual producers, broadcasters and content providers from around the world.

Job Description

Working closely with the Senior Marketing & Communications Manager, and the Senior Communications Coordinator, the Social Media & Content Coordinator will be responsible for curating and creating engaging social media and web content for all programming at Hot Docs Cinema and Hot Docs at Home, including film runs, special events and series, and signature festivals including Hot Docs Podcast Festival (January 26-28, 2022). A strong brand communicator with excellent writing skills and an eye for graphic design, they will also be responsible for crafting film and event copy, gathering and creating digital promotional assets, and supporting the Hot Docs Cinema communications team with key promotions and marketing campaigns.

Opportunity Type: Full-time Contract, with possibility of extension

Compensation: $865.40/week

Employment Period: November 15, 2021 - June 3, 2022

  • Source, create and maintain the posting of daily content for the Cinema’s social media channels (Facebook, Twitter, Instagram);
  • Create an engaging social media presence for the Hot Docs at Home streaming platform, and the Hot Docs Podcast Festival, January 26-28, 2022;
  • Craft web copy for Hot Docs Cinema films and special events;
  • Gather social and other digital materials, and assist with the design of in-house assets as need be;
  • Create and conduct social media promotions, including ticket giveaways;
  • Prepare and issue film and event listings;
  • Assist with other marketing and communications tasks, as required.


  • Minimum 1-3 years experience with writing and designing social media content for brands/events/cultural organizations (or equivalent experience);
  • Familiarity with the backend of major social media platforms, and social media analytics tools, including Hootsuite;
  • Proficiency with Canva or Adobe Creative Suite;
  • Experience copywriting and editing for brands/organizations (an asset but not essential)
  • Excellent communication skills with a keen grasp of grammar and spelling;
  • Superior attention to detail, organization and planning skills;
  • Ability to work independently and with a team;
  • Current knowledge of, or interest in the broader cultural landscape (an asset but not essential)
