Royal Canadian Academy of Arts
The Royal Canadian Academy of Arts is an honourary organization of over 790 established professional artists and designers from all regions of Canada. Members practice in more than thirty visual arts disciplines including but not limited to painting, print-making, architecture, sculpture, design, photography, ceramics, film, video, and digital art.
With members nominated and elected by their peers the RCA has, since 1880, come to represent many of Canada’s most distinguished visual artists and designers. The objectives of the RCA are to encourage, improve, promote, support and cultivate the visual arts through its many activities.
The Royal Canadian Academy of Arts is incorporated federally as a non-profit corporation and has a charitable designation as a national arts organization.

Job Description

The Royal Canadian Academy of Arts is a charitable, non-profit organization seeking new volunteers for its Governing Council. We look to receive expressions of interest from individuals – non-RCA members as well as members - who embrace the mission of the visual arts organization with the longest history in Canada, who have previous experience on a working board, a willingness to serve on committees, attend meetings of council and committees, and commit to the governance work required.
 
The RCA is presently going through a period of transition and restructuring that will require knowledge and skills in one or (preferably) more areas of board governance: policy, finance, programs, personnel, advocacy, and fundraising.
 
The position of Treasurer is currently vacant and designated for a non-RCA member. All other positions are open to both RCA and non-members, with a view to balance by region, gender, discipline, and experience.

Requirements:

Duties of the Treasurer:
Participates as a member of the Executive Committee;
Normally would Chair the Finance Committee;
Develops and maintains financial reports;
Understands financial accounting for nonprofit organizations;
Ensures the accuracy and accountability of the RCA bookkeeper and bookkeeping;
Ensures that adequate expenditure controls and cash flow are in place;
Makes sure all required financial reports are filed;
Manages, with the Finance Committee, the council’s review of and action related to the council’s financial responsibilities;  
Works with the President and the Managing Director to ensure that appropriate financial reports are made available to Council on a timely basis;  
Assists the President and the Managing Director in preparing the annual budget and presenting the budget to Council for approval; speaks to the budget in partnership with the Managing Director and Finance Committee;
Reviews the annual audit and answers Council members' questions about the audit;
Acts as signing officer for cheques and other documents;
Ensures that accurate accounts of Council receipts and disbursements for council-related expenditures are kept;
Orients the new Treasurer.
