Job Description

Based in Toronto, Ontario, Canada with responsibility to the Director of Artistic and Production, the Vocal Director works closely with Resident Directors, Production Supervisors, Performers and Creative teams to master the vocal needs of our Walt Disney Theatre mainstage shows and DCL entertainment offerings.  The Vocal Director will operate in close partnership with the Walt Disney World Music Department and shipboard audio teams. 
 
Responsibilities:
 
  • Teaches and vocal directs existing scores to Mainstage performers cast in Disney Cruise Line productions – including but not limited to theatrical productions, deck parties, theme nights, restaurant entertainment, character programs and other Disney specific entertainment events and activities.
  • Partners with the Resident Director to maintain creative intention and motivation.
  • Assists the Resident Director with casting primary and understudy roles.
  • Filters scheduling requests through the Production Supervisor and collaborates to achieve overall scheduling strategies.
  • Collaborates and partners with a range of Disney professionals to include:
    • Resident Directors
    • Production Manager
    • Production Supervisors
    • DCL Talent Casting
    • Choreographers/Dance Supervisors
    • Senior Technical and Audio Teams
    • Stage Manager
    • Character Manager
    • DCL Puppet Specialist
    • WDI Creative Directors
    • DCL & WDE Show Directors
  • Maintains Disney Parks Live Entertainment creative standards, including but not limited to Disney standards of safety, show quality, character integrity and show development.
  • Gives notes and performance feedback to Performers and Shipboard Audio Technicians.
  • Participates in selecting and mentoring the cast Vocal Captain.  Provides tools and knowledge to prepare them to successfully fulfill the duties of their leadership role.
  • Understands this opportunity requires scheduled and un-scheduled travel to ships to maintain / open shows.


Requirements:

Qualifications:
 
  • Post-Secondary education in Music, or equivalent.
  • Highly skilled and proficient piano skills, with the ability to sight read musical scores, accompany LIVE auditions or rehearsals, and improvisational accompaniment for cabaret or LIVE performances.
  • Conducting skills – with focused experience in musical theatre conducting.
  • At least 10 years professional experience in theatrical music and vocal instruction.
  • 5 years leadership and supervisory experience in a fast-paced entertainment environment such as the Walt Disney Company (or similar).
  • Must have at least 5 years’ experience as a Music/Vocal Director for a specific theatre company or university (preferably for The Walt Disney Company or a similar musical theatre entertainment entity).
  • Excels at motivating large groups and serves as a mentor.
  • Understanding of Disney character brand usage and how it interfaces with the Disney Cruise Line repertory theatre model.
  • Excellent communication, organizational and interpersonal skills.
  • Computer proficiency – Excel, Word, Outlook.
  • Willingness & ability to travel to the U.S. and internationally.
  • Agreeable to all maritime sailing and seafarer guidelines, requirements and regulations, including sailing onboard the DCL ships statused as “crew" and assigned to the crew manifest.
