Arc Poetry Society is recruiting for its Board for Directors!

Arc Poetry Society, a not-for-profit organization, is dedicated to nurturing and promoting the composition, appreciation, and understanding of poetry in Canada and abroad, with a particular emphasis on Canadian poetry. As the legal entity that administers the publication of Arc Poetry Magazine, the society plays a pivotal role in advancing the literary arts in Canada through this publication and other initiatives.

Governance of Arc is entrusted to a volunteer Board of Directors. The board is responsible for the strategic direction, financial oversight, and operation guidance of the organization, working collaboratively with a dedicated Editorial Board and a small team of talented independent contractors.

Board members ideally take on 1-2 specific roles within the board but may contribute to as many committees as they’d like and have capacity for. In addition to distinct responsibilities related to specific roles, board members are invited to support other aspects of Arc’s work including editorial and programming initiatives.

Role: Vice President (Executive)

Time Commitment:

10-15 hours/month including participation in quarterly business meetings, supplementary board meetings, and involvement in editorial and programming initiatives.

Responsibilities & Authority:

1. Operations Oversight:
– Oversee the day-to-day operations of Arc, providing support and leadership to the contractor team.
– Collaborate with the President and other Executive members to manage the overall workflow of the organization, ensuring that operational goals are met.
– Lead or facilitate team training and development, fostering a positive and effective working environment.
– Provide operational reporting at quarterly business meetings.

2. Support to the President:
– Work closely with the President to assist with overarching responsibilities, including governance, strategic planning, and external representation.
– Act as the President in their absence, ensuring continuity in leadership and decision-making.
– Collaborate with the President in leading recruitment efforts for new directors and supporting governance improvements.

3. Human Resource Management:
– Provide support in managing independent contractors, including recruitment, retention, and performance evaluation.
– Lead human resource matters in collaboration with the Executive and HR Advisor, including contract negotiations and team leadership support.

4. Financial Decision-Making:
Support the Treasurer in financial planning and oversight, contributing to the fiscal health of the organization.

5. External Representation:
Represent Arc to external stakeholders when needed, building relationships with key partners and sponsors.
– Collaborate with the President to enhance Arc’s visibility and influence within the literary community.
