Bring your skills, experience and education to the challenge of leading the Canadian Automotive Museum into its next 60 years of preserving and sharing Canada’s automotive heritage.

The Board of Directors of the Museum is seeking a talented and innovative individual to be its new Executive Director and Curator, responsible for achievement of the Museum’s mission through planning, resource optimization and operational management.

The Canadian Automotive Museum opened in 1963 and today is home to the world’s most significant collection of Canadian cars and the Glenn H. Baechler Canadian Automotive Research Library. Its collection of more than 80 vehicles is housed in a former 1920s car dealership building in downtown Oshawa, Ontario. The Museum serves as one of the top tourist destinations in Durham Region with more than 13,000 guests annually. Essential Responsibilities of the Executive Director and Curator

Organizational Leadership – Provide professional advice to the Board on all aspects of the organization’s activities.  Participate with the Board in strategic planning. Identify, assess and inform the Board of internal and external issues that affect the organization.

Operations Management – Ensure that Museum policies are developed, implemented and maintained and recommend changes to the Board. Maintain accurate records for human resources, financial and reporting purposes. Provide leadership for the development, and project management for the maintenance, of the Museum’s infrastructure.

Programming – Oversee the planning, implementation and evaluation of the organization’s public and educational programs, permanent and special exhibits, and services.

Collections Management – Keep updated and oversee the Collections Management and Record Keeping Policies. Curate the Museum, library and archives collections, providing for their development, preservation, documentation and interpretation.

Community Relationships / Advocacy – Build partnerships and collaborations with other institutions and the community. Engage in public relations, marketing and communications initiatives to raise the Museum’s visibility throughout the Region and nation. Be the face of the Museum in different settings.

Human Resources – Lead a team of 6-8 employees and a dedicated team of 20+ volunteers ensuring a positive, healthy and safe work environment. Ensure that human resource policies, procedures and practices are in place and communicated appropriately.  Provide for the hiring and development of appropriate staff to achieve the Museum’s mission.

Financial Management – Work with the Board to ensure the Museum’s financial sustainability through forecasting, planning, and budgeting. Collaborate with the Board to raise funds and submit effective grant proposals. Ensure appropriate financial controls and reporting systems are in place.

Risk management – Identify, evaluate and implement measures to control risks to the Museum’s people, property, collections, finances, goodwill and image.
