Job Title: Executive Director

Reports to: Artistic Director

Status: Full Time

Position Summary Edmonton Opera is looking for a highly skilled Executive Director to help us fulfill our mission. Reporting to the Artistic Director, the Executive Director will oversee the strategic and operational efficiencies of the team. This leader will not only understand current trends in the arts but will also have experience in developing and implementing a successful fundraising plan. Experience in hiring and managing staff is valued, and established relationships with local community groups is a plus. Above all, the Executive Director should be highly effective in a leadership role that requires clear communication skills and decisiveness. The ideal candidate will have 5-7 years of management and supervisory experience. An understanding of the elements of artistic production is an important part of this position. Excellent written and oral communications skills are also valued, as is a strong desire to work in a highly collaborative environment.

Major Duties and Accountabilities

1. Finance

In consultation with the Artistic Director and the Board, this position is responsible for developing, monitoring and maintaining the financial goals and objectives of the company

  • While detailed financial reporting is the responsible of the CFO, the Executive Director is accountable for monitoring and overseeing the appropriateness, and timeliness of all internal and external financial reports

  • The ED identifies risk and organizes a comprehensive system of risk analysis that is effectively communicated to the Board

  • The ED attends Finance Committee Meetings 

2. Budget

  • The Executive Director collaborates with the Artistic Director and the CFO to create effective budgeting processes and ensures that those processes are completed in a timely manner

  • The ED ensures that appropriate budget monitoring processes are in place and alerts the Artistic Director and the Board when revenue and expenditure targets are at risk.

  • Provides guidance to the Board on possible actions that are available to resolve budget anomalies. 

3. Grants

  • Identifies areas of government support and supervises the preparation of grant applications

  • Oversees the use of grants by adhering to compliance requirements and ensuring that useful report data is available from various departments 

4. Fund Development and Government Relations

  • The Executive Director works closely with the Director of Fund Development and Government Relations to ensure that targets are aligned and met, and that corporate messaging on funding needs are affectively communicated to internal and external communities

  • The Executive Director ensures that the company maintains a system and plan of coordinated fundraising approaches to donors, granting agencies and government representatives. 

5. Human Resources

  • Maintains an effective system of compensation including salary reviews, performance appraisals and benefits

  • Ensures that the work environment Of Edmonton Opera is free of harassment, sexual harassment and bullying and oversees the internal systems of reporting and investigation 

6. Board support

  • In collaboration with the Board Chair, provides the Board with agendas, minutes and Board records via company secretary

  • Attends all Board meetings and serves as executive liaison to the Executive Committee and Finance Committee 

Knowledge Requirements and Job Specifications

  • Five to seven years of experience in senior management, ideally with nonprofit organizations

  • Experience in public relations, marketing, and fundraising

  • Dynamic and charismatic team player who enjoys being a public face for an organization 


SALARY RANGE: $80,000 — $110,000

BENEFITS: Edmonton Opera offers a comprehensive compensation package with an annual salary of $80,000 – $110,000 per year commensurate with experience, together with a comprehensive benefit package.
