Description
Nature and Scope of Position
Reporting to the Head of Education, the Education Assistant is responsible for supporting two key elements within the gallery: the Galleries’ education programs and the Visitor Services Department, as needed.
Education Program
In coordination with the Head of Education, the Education Assistant plays a vital role in delivering multiple visual art-based activities and programs to our communities and patrons (from children to seniors). From development to planning and delivery, the EA will assist in all aspects of our renowned education program and plays an essential role in its coordination and execution. The ideal candidate should have a demonstrated interest in and appreciation for contemporary art and art education and should be excited by the opportunity to broaden public knowledge of art concepts while fostering students’ curiosity through art-making.
Gallery Operations
The EA also plays an important role in our Gallery Operations department by greeting guests and patrons at both our Gairloch and Centennial locations, answering queries and telephone calls, and assisting in the general operation of these locations. The EA is a key member of the front-of-house team and serves as an ambassador of Oakville Galleries through regular contact with members of the public.
General Responsibilities and Duties
- Along with the Head of Education, the EA reviews previous programs and course offerings to discuss, develop, and plan existing education programs, as well as create new programs and activities.
- Meets with the Head of Education to review scheduled programs and groups prior to the program start date to ensure that all staffing and material needs have been met.
- Assists the Head of Education with the management of the co-op education program with local high schools, colleges, and universities, and supervises co-op students in the Galleries.
- Meets with art instructors to identify their supply needs and maintains inventory of supplies, reporting to the Head of Education any items needing replacement.
- Purchases and transports equipment and supplies to onsite and offsite locations as needed.
- Teaches onsite and offsite education programs as needed.
- Attends special events and training sessions as required.
- Introduces visitors to Oakville Galleries’ exhibitions and programs.
- Ensures general security for artworks on view, encouraging and enforcing safety and security protocols with the general public.
- Initiates discussions about and leads tours of the exhibitions on view.
- Provides information about Oakville Galleries’ educational and public programs, and accepts registrations and payments through our database.
- Promotes Oakville Galleries membership programs to visitors and supports administration of membership programs as needed.
- Maintains attendance records and completes daily task checklists.
- Opens and closes the gallery spaces on time.
- Other duties as assigned.

Qualifications and Experience
Required Qualifications and Experience:
The Ideal Candidate
- Has completed or is working towards a post-secondary program in Visual and/or Media Arts, Art History, Art Education, Museum Studies, or a related discipline.
- Has experience teaching and supervising groups of children and youth (ages 0 to 18 years) in a camp and/or educational setting.
- Demonstrates a solid knowledge of and a keen interest in contemporary visual art.
- Is familiar with a broad range of artistic techniques, practices, and materials.
- Has experience in developing lesson and activity plans and a demonstrated interest in working with children, youth, adults, and seniors.
- Has strong organizational, planning, and leadership skills.
- Has the ability to work both independently and proactively in a team environment.
- Is responsible, hard-working, enthusiastic, and dynamic.
- Has demonstrated exceptional interpersonal and communication skills.
- Additional training/experience in recreation, early childhood education, or film/video production is an asset.
- A valid driver’s license and access to a vehicle will be considered an asset.
- Is comfortable interacting with members of the public and delivering public tours.
- Is able to work independently, self-motivate, and multi-task.
- Has a working knowledge of MacOS and Google Workspace environments.
- Has availability to work flexible hours on weekdays, evenings, and weekends.
- Smart Serve certification is considered an asset.
- CPR certification must be completed within 30 days of hire if not currently certified.
