Description
An international classical music festival and academy now entering its 20th anniversary season, Toronto Summer Music (TSM) brings world-renowned performing artists to Toronto for an unparalleled combination of concerts and other related programs and events. During the Festival period, TSM also hosts the Academy for Emerging Artists – an internationally renowned, pre-eminent summer training program for chamber music and Art Song. The Toronto Summer Music Community Program, now entering its 10th year, is a unique audience engagement activity, bringing advanced amateur musicians to spend a week at the Festival.
The Artistic Director reports to the Board of Directors and works closely with the Executive Director and Academy Director. They hold the primary responsibility for overseeing the artistic direction of the TSM Festival. Together with the Academy Director, the Artistic Director is also responsible for leading the TSM Academy, including the Emerging Artist Program, and Community Program.
The position of Artistic Director requires a proven track record in musical performance, music education, and artistic administration including related experience in fund-raising. The successful candidate will be an inspiring leader, public speaker, educator, and advocate for classical music.

RESPONSIBILITIES
Festival
- Establish annual focus and specific musical themes and content
- Engage top-ranked Canadian and international artists within the TSM budget
- Create exceptional, powerful, and transformative musical experiences for our audiences, promoting audience growth, engagement and loyalty
- Interface with the public as a performer, and one of the leaders of the organization
Academy – Emerging Artist Program
(Chamber Music Institute and Art of Song Program)
- Engage world-class faculty as weekly mentors to work with the Chamber Music Institute Fellows (four-week program)
- Support Art of Song Program Director in engaging top-tier faculty to work with the Art of Song Fellows (two-week program)
- Assist Academy Director and Communications Manager with recruitment
- Work with Academy Director to review applications and admissions
- Program weekly repertoire and groups for the Chamber Music Institute Fellows
Academy – Community Program
(Chamber Music, Chamber Choir, Piano Masterclass)
- Engage top-tier local faculty for the three streams in the Community Program (one-week program)
- Assist Academy Director and Communications Manager with recruitment
- Work with Academy Director to program repertoire and groups for the Chamber Music stream
Development and Marketing
- Assist with artistic contribution input for governmental grants, foundations, and corporate asks
- In tandem with Executive Director and Development Manager, meet with current patrons and potential supporters of our programs to steward and cultivate
- Attend regular (often monthly) Board meetings
- Attend promotional events throughout the year with support from staff, including house parties and launch events
- Work with the Communications Manager to ensure a high profile for Toronto Summer Music and to build attendance at concerts
REQUIREMENTS
- A strong leader capable of forging collaborations and creating new experiences for our audiences
- Excellent communication skills (verbal and written)
- Ability to work cooperatively with board, artists, staff, donors, and vendors
- Ability to be in attendance during the Festival period (four weeks from July to August, usually the week after the July 1st long weekend)
- Strong organizational skills
- Passion for education opportunities for emerging young artists and community members
