The Concerned Kids
The Concerned Kids is a non-profit organization that educates and empowers youth through the uniquely engaging art of puppetry about serious social issues that children face on a day to day basis, to make smarter and kinder choices, thus enabling our schools and communities to become a safer place to live, learn and play. Puppetry is an excellent medium to reach young people because the listeners are not threatened, as they might be by an adult. Children and youth relate to what the life-size puppets are experiencing and it is easier for them to absorb the information, knowledge and life skills that they are presented with. Our puppets relay serious situations from their own lives with a big dash of humour, while still presenting useful knowledge and skills.
The Concerned Kids will be recruiting volunteer puppeteers for the 2017 school year with training & rehearsals starting the first week of February. We will be launching some new programming focusing on topics of: Healthy Kids (exercise, nutrition & healthy minds); Safety Lessons (stranger danger, area codes, emergency plans); Personal Safety (physical, neglect & child abuse awareness); Community Awareness (vandalism & graffiti prevention); Physical Differences (about cerebral palsy, impaired vision and 2 friends going to camp. These new programs will complement our current programs about Anti-Bullying Awareness; Mental Health Awareness; a new program about Cyberbullying; plus our Peer Pressure & Substance Abuse Program.
A love for performing & theatre experience is an asset. Intensive professional mandatory training of approximately 36 hours + rehearsal time in a style of Bunraku puppetry is required and will be provided at NO Cost to you.
Successful candidates upon completion of the training & rehearsals will be expected to commit at least 3 to 4 DAYS PER MONTH during school hours from March 2017 to the middle of June 2017. We are looking for creative and enthusiastic individuals passionate about exploring social issues which affect youth today, using the creative medium of interactive puppetry. We are still entertaining some interviews for the week of February 20th, 2017. Only serious applicants need apply.
