The Cameco Capitol Arts Centre, houses the Capitol Theatre now a designated national historic site. As such, this splendid building and venue mirrors Canada’s past in the exhibition of performing arts and movies while, at the same time looking forward to the next chapter of its storied evolution.
The Capitol Theatre, built in 1930, made movie history, exhibiting the first “talkie” in Canada and has functioned as a multi-entertainment venue since its re-birth in 1995. Today, its patrons live and work in Port Hope, but also travel from points west to Toronto – only an hour away – and east to Ottawa linked by rail, bus, and car.
The Capitol Theatre draws industry talent for its professional productions as well as engaging with the local artistic and creative community for amateur and semi-professional productions. Operating year round, the Capitol offers live theatre, concerts, TIFF films, HD opera and much more by way of two splendid performance venues.

The Capitol Theatre in Port Hope, Ontario
New Position for a New Mission in a New Time


The Cameco Capitol Arts Centre is a designated National Historic Site, housing the Capitol Theatre, a multi-entertainment and community program venue with two distinct performance spaces –
  • The historic main stage Atmospheric Theatre seating 385 people
  • And the Sculthorpe Theatre seating another 100 patrons.  
 The Capitol is a not-for-profit regional theatre that has doubled its revenue through its pre-pandemic customer and event growth, however like all theatres, we have been hit hard by the harsh economic and human effects of COVID-19.
 
Located in historic Port Hope serving southeastern Ontario, the Capitol draws its customers from an expanded market place extending from the Greater Toronto Area to Ottawa.
 
The Capitol has recently completed an expansion of theatre capacity, including a new rehearsal hall and the forementioned studio theatre now available for events and programming. The expansion also provides increased lobby space, improved patron facilities, a new kitchen servery and storage areas.

Emerging from the pandemic, the Capitol Theatre’s patrons will be younger and audience tastes more diverse. We will need commercially-sound great entertainment that elevates the human spirit, projects hope, happiness, inspiration and human affirmation, touches our heart and funny-bone and makes our toes tap and fingers snap.
 
As this next chapter of the Capitol’s evolution begins so does the role of our artistic leader.  Therefore, we are seeking an Artistic Producer and Co-Leader of the Capitol Theatre working in partnership with our incumbent Managing Director.  

This position represents a wonderful career opportunity and the successful candidate will work with a deeply engaged Board, 200 volunteers and a management team that has led the theatre – even with its curtain down – with new innovations in systems management and customer communications. All dedicated to serving, engaging and entertaining Capitol patrons.
 
Operating year-round, the Capitol offers professional live theatre through its Port Hope Festival Theatre as well as amateur live theatre, an annual holiday Panto, TIFF and other films, The Met HD Opera series, community events and much more by way of the two splendid performance venues.
 
THE POSITION:
 
The Artistic Producer (AP) will set the Capitol Theatre’s artistic and creative direction, delivering it’s year-round programming for two theatres, act as a confident project manager overseeing all aspects of the production process including scheduling, negotiation, liaison, contracting, budgeting and monitoring.

This position reports to the Board of Directors through the President and works closely and collaboratively with the Theatre’s Managing Director to produce a schedule reflecting the Theatre’s post-pandemic mission.
 
RESPONSIBILITIES:
  • Develop and present for the board’s approval an innovative artistic vision that delivers an imaginative schedule of quality performances with a view to balancing company objectives of program excellence, audience growth and risk-taking.
  • Demonstrate an innovative and contemporary approach to selecting, planning, producing and carrying theatrical programming within approved budgets. This means prudent management of approved annual budgets, forecasting income and expenditures and tracking payment schedules. 
    Secure production and technical resources, including innovative technology to ensure effective support of productions and production timelines across the organization.
  • Personally direct at least one production each Season. Supervise and support guest directors who direct other productions during the season.
    Foster and maintain positive working relationships with industry partners, stakeholders, and producing partners (venue partners, co-producers and presenters). Lead the planning of annual festivals, concerts, readings and educational events.
  • In the face of the Pandemic, and even in its wake, ensure effective health and safety for all projects and events, including undertaking risk assessments where required.
    Maintain a proactive and creative leadership role in securing funding, grant writing and sourcing, planning and delivery of fundraising activities, maintaining relations and reporting with key funders.


Requirements:

JOB REQUIREMENTS:
  • 3-5  years experience in theatre creation, production, events management and strong familiarity and working experience with professional theatre.
  • Effective in community outreach and media relations.
  • Well established written and oral communications skills and strong interpersonal skills.
  • A decisive self-starter who can act quickly to take advantage of opportunities that advance the organization’s mission.
  • Good working knowledge of the Canadian Theatre Agreement (CTA), Canadian Actors’ Equity Agreement (CAEA), Associated Designers of Canada (ADC).
  • Understands and applies social media for production and promotional purposes.
  • Demonstrably excellent project and financial management, administrative and organizational skills.
  • Experience liaising with a wide variety of artists, groups and partner organizations.
  • Honest, transparent, resilient professional with an ability to work with a wide variety of personalities.
