Community Music Schools of Toronto (Expanding from Regent Park School of Music)

Community Music Schools of Toronto aims to provide high quality, affordable music education to youth-in-need from Regent Park and other areas of the City of Toronto. It is one of Toronto’s most diverse music schools, offering both private and group lessons with an emphasis on quality, collaboration and creativity. Located in Daniels Spectrum, a new community arts centre in the heart of Regent Park, our staff, faculty and volunteers work tirelessly to oversee the safety and growth of our students. CMST also operates satellite programs in other high need areas of the city where children receive extra-curricular music lessons in the safe and familiar space of their own community school.

Job Description

Role Overview
Reporting to the Director of Finance, the Accountant at Community Music Schools of Toronto (CMST) is responsible for full-cycle accounting for both the School and Foundation, including; recording contributed revenue and expenses transactions, processing payments, processing payroll, conducting banking activities, producing various financial reports and regulatory filings, and preparing account reconciliations. The role is expected to require a 4-day commitment per week with some flexibility. This role works in collaboration with diverse school stakeholders and is a key representative for the organization enabling the organizational mission and strategy.

Key Responsibilities
  • Accounts Payable processing (CIBC Smart Banking and cheques as required)
  • Coordinate authorization of payments
  • Bank and credit card reconciliations and other balance sheet reconciliations
  • Process payroll and related filings
  • Process contributed revenue
  • Prepare HST rebate filings
  • Prepare monthly and annual financial reports
  • Prepare year end files for auditor
  • Assist in budgeting process with specific focus on expenditures and project budgets
  • Assist in cash flow forecasting and coordinate monthly transfers between School and Foundation
  • Prepare monthly investment accounting and related reporting
  • Regular meetings with leadership and other staff as required, to discuss financials
  • Organize, manage, and store paper and online financial records
  • Other duties as required


 Qualifications, Skills & Requirements
  • Accounting and Finance experience working in or providing services in the charitable sector
  • A university degree is preferred
  • Software Experience: MS Office (Word, Excel, Outlook), QuickBooks, Ceridian/ADP required
  • Knowledge of CADAC reporting requirements
  • CPA (Chartered Professional Accountant) or CPB (Certified Professional Bookkeeper) is preferred
  • Experience processing payroll is required. Payroll designation is preferred (PCP/CPM).
  • Experience with accounting for foundations and investment accounting is preferred
  • Strong management ability and a sincere commitment to the goals and values of the organization
  • Strong organization, planning and interpersonal skills
  • Attention to detail and accuracy
  • Self-motivated and accountable
  • Collaborative team player 
  • Primarily daytime hours
  • A vulnerable sector police check is required
  • Languages: Fluent in English (written & spoken)
