The Musical Stage Company is the largest and leading charitable musical theatre company in Toronto. Established in 2004 as Acting Up Stage Company, we strive to make Canada a leader in musical theatre.
We believe “it’s better with music” and apply this philosophy to all of our programming on- and off-stage including our contemporary professional musical productions and concerts, our investment in Canadian writers and the development of original musicals, and through our diverse free youth programs that meaningfully connect young people to our chosen art-form.

Our productions are timely, thought-provoking and entertaining, challenging expectations of the genre. A Craigslist Cantata, Ride The Cyclone, Parade, The Light In The Piazza, and Elegies: A Song Cycle as well as our annual signature UnCovered concert at Koerner Hall. In the summer of 2022, The Musical Stage Company will be showcasing a wide array of talents in venues across the city, from outdoor stages, to historic indoor venues, and into Toronto neighbourhoods and communities through enhanced participatory events, community concerts, and cabarets. 

Job Description

The Musical Stage Company is looking to hire a personable, resourceful, results-driven Development Associate who is excited to directly contribute to our revenue-generating strategies. Working closely with and reporting to the Co-Executive Director, the Development Officer will be responsible for the cultivation, solicitation and stewardship of all donors up to $5,000 annually, managing the individual donor strategy for targeted groups, and devising and executing numerous activities related to fundraising and outreach while promoting a culture of philanthropy with donors, audience members and throughout the organization. This full-time position will directly impact the ways we connect with supporters, both current and prospective. 
The role requires a self-starter as well as team-player who is keen to work as part of a team in strategy, organization and execution of duties. Our goal is to deepen existing relationships and exceed existing stakeholders’ expectations while actively increasing our donor and audience-base.
The position presents a fantastic opportunity to contribute to a growing performing arts organization while building on skills related to fundraising and marketing, and is ideal for an energetic, whip-smart individual who has a passion for people and musical theatre.

  • As part of the Development team, identify and target new fundraising opportunities for the company and create stewardship strategies for all existing fundraising stakeholders;Independently maintain and deepen relationships with donors up to $5,000/year;
  • Strategize the cultivation, solicitation and stewardship of new donors up to $5,000/year;
  • Independently cultivate new relationship with individual donors, leveraging existing relationships to generate individual gifts up to $5,000;
  • Conduct donor consultation and cultivation meetings to deliver highly customized stewardship and recognition plans;
  • Assist in execution of acquisition strategies for young, mid-level and multi-year donors at all levels;
  • Strategize, manage and execute fundraising events and donor events including but not limited to Insider Events, House Concerts, & Virtuoso Events;
  • Assist in writing all renewal, acquisition, and lapsed letters and outreach copy; 
  • Assist in writing all Development-related social media copy;
  • Strategize and manage the donor experience at all performance venues, liaising with venue partners, and front of house staff as necessary; 
  • Attend performances and events, actively building in-person relationships with our donors and supporters;
  • Work with corporate sponsors, foundation and grants as needed;
  • Other duties as required.


The successful candidate will have:
  • 3-5 years experience in forward-facing role(s) which cultivated meaningful relationships with patrons;
  • A strong passion for the performing arts with a love of musical theatre specifically;
  • Stellar written and oral communication with adaptability for varying audiences;
  • Outstanding EQ with the ability to build authentic relationships quickly;
  • An understanding of the needs of a complex group of stakeholders and willingness to meet and exceed them;
  • Curiosity and familiarity with the wealth of arts and non-arts organizations and their activities in GTA;
  • High level of proficiency in Microsoft Office (excel, word and PowerPoint);
  • The ability to multi-task and coordinate multiple simultaneous projects as well as respond to quickly changing priorities;
  • A detail-oriented approach with an appreciation for big picture strategy and the ability to see several steps ahead; 
  • The ability to thrive working both independently and as a part of a team;
  • A strong team-player approach with a “can do” attitude and willingness to be flexible and pitch-in where needed;
  • Meticulous organizational skills; 
  • Personable with integrity, credibility, sound judgment and a keen interest in The Musical Stage Company’s mission and vision.
Nice to haves:
  • Post-secondary education or equivalent, ideally in one or more of the following areas: fundraising, communications or arts administration
  • Experience working with InDesign
  • Experience working with CRM software (Sumac)
  • Experience with SEO, Google AdWords and Google analytics

Additional Info:

  • Flex hours and bi-weekly 4-day work weeks when appropriate
  • Hybrid work from home/ in office
  • Evening and weekend work will be required on occasion
