Organization Description

Job Description

The Fortress Louisbourg Association (FLA) is a proud, non-profit, charitable, and membership-driven organization that strives to foster a better appreciation of Canada and the history and culture of the Fortress of Louisbourg through tangible sensory experiences. Founded in 1976, the FLA works in partnership with Parks Canada to ensure that the commemorative and ecological integrity of the Fortress of Louisbourg National Historic Site is sustained for present and future generations. The FLA develops and delivers programs, promotions, special projects and operational services and other exceptional visitor services such as after-hours tours, archaeology programs, theatre programs and many more. Its period restaurant, bakery, coffee shop, and two gift boutiques further help visitors understand, appreciate and enjoy the largest reconstructed 18th century French fortified town in North America.

Now, the FLA is seeking an Executive Director to provide strategic and operational leadership to staff and volunteers in carrying out the organization’s mission and strategic priorities and to work with the Board of Directors to chart the course for the future of the Fortress of Louisbourg Association.

Reporting to the Board of Directors, as the Executive Director you will be responsible for providing leadership, direction and guidance for all the FLA’s staff, operations and activities. You will work in collaboration with the Board to lead the renewal and implementation of the vision and strategic plan of the organization. You will capably steward the organization’s $1m budget and you will lead and engage a small year-round team and a seasonal team of over 60 employees. You will build and strengthen the FLA’s relationships with Parks Canada, regulatory bodies, other agencies, community organizations, volunteers, donors, funders and the local community of Louisbourg. Through the development and strengthening of key local, regional and national relationships, you will ensure the ongoing sustainability and success of the FLA in achieving its strategic priorities. You will serve as a passionate and compelling ambassador for the FLA and you will ensure the organization has a strong presence and voice in the local community and beyond.

As the ideal candidate, you are a proven leader and manager and you bring vision, management acumen, and exceptional communication and relationship building skills. You are comfortable working within a multi-stakeholder environment and managing operations, financial and human resources. You have a reputation for getting things done, a talent for identifying innovative opportunities to improve operational processes, and a proven track record of successfully contributing across all functional areas of an organization. You are comfortable at the front of the room or with your sleeves rolled up. Your positive management style, combined with your business management aptitude and your proven ability to build strong, lasting relationships with a range of organizational stakeholders, qualifies you for this exciting opportunity.
