Job Description

About the role:

Reporting to the Executive Director (ED), this is an opportunity to bring your experience of achieving operational excellence and a track record of leading projects with diverse teams that create lasting positive change.  Our new  Managing Director will lead an experienced and dedicated team across resource development, HR, operations and programming.  You will be an action-oriented leader and strategist who can motivate staff, lead organizational development, ensure financial sustainability, create a great place to work and ensure that our collaborators and donors experience the best of us. 

Core function:

The Managing Director plays a critical role and is responsible for ensuring that there is coherence and consistency across the organization. Working with the ED, you will provide oversight and lead operations in the areas of fundraising, grant writing, HR, financial management and external stakeholder development

Overseeing a growing team, you will be a key connector between the ED, staff, and  external partners. You will be the primary point of escalation for staff, community, industry, government, and donors and will need to tactically balance diplomacy and discretion with candor and clarity.  Along with data driven adaptability and fearless communication, this role is best suited for an action-oriented leader who can build and support a brilliant team capable of collaborating productively and successfully

Key responsibilities:

Revenue Development & Partnership Stewardship
  • Manage fund development strategy, initiate, and execute granting proposals and in-kind opportunities with foundations, corporations, government, and industry partners.
  • Research, prepare and write all government, corporate and foundation grant applications in collaboration with ED and staff team to take advantage of all development opportunities
  • Complete and ensure the regular and timely submission of reports and updates to funders, donors, and board.
  • Develop and manage strong relationships and networks between POV and other stakeholders including the TV, film & commercial production industries, its unions, community organizations, private and public foundations, educational institutions, and corporations.
  • Seek out interesting and like-minded organizations and collaborators across the country to create shared activities which strengthen POV’s vision and ensure that POV is part of wider activities and debates that contribute to inclusive and equitable workforce within the TV, Film and commercial production industries
HR & Operations
  • Supervise staff across POV and provide regular performance feedback, proactively resolving emerging challenges.
  • Ensure that POV has the appropriate staff structure to grow and deliver its programs in an equitable, effective, and sustainable way.
  • Monitor and analyze POV’s program budgets to ensure financial resources are properly managed and effectively allocated.
  • Take overall responsibility for financial management in all areas of POV’s operations, working closely with managers and other staff.
  • Solicit and analyze reports and plans prepared by staff to determine progress and address emerging pressure points.
  • In collaboration with evaluation consultant, oversee and implement POV’s evaluation strategies to monitor performance and determine the need for improvements.
  • Ensure programs, operations, fundraising, and other activities adhere to legal guidelines and internal policies and protocols that are approved by ED and the board.
  • Adhere and actively contribute to all policies and procedures including Equity, Diversity and Inclusion, health and safety, accessibility, and sustainability.
Leadership & Strategy
  • Working with the ED, collaborate with funders, service providers, industry partners, and community groups to incorporate insights, expertise, and support for the benefit of POV’s mission and operational strategy
  • Lead through example and reinforce a culture of engagement, high-performance, continuous improvement, free from harassment and fear of judgement.
  • Create a positive working culture and support staff to ensure timely reports, financial information, effective communications, stakeholder support and any other programs or creative activities.
  • Positively contribute to a constructive relationship with and between ED, managers, and staff.  A genuine relationship that is respectful, open to challenge and healthy debate resulting in shared commitment, mutual understanding and accountability for follow-through that achieves desired results for the ongoing success of POV’s mission.
  • Enable ED to successfully fulfill their governance and fiduciary responsibility by providing accurate, timely, comprehensive, and insightful operational, financial, and organizational risk information.

What you bring:
  • Strong business acumen, keen strategic ability, excellent organizational capacity, and collaborative leadership skills
  • Analytical mindset with great problem-solving abilities and demonstrated experience in a leadership role through a flexible and pragmatic approach, with the ability to innovate and think creatively.
  • Proven networks and capacity that can establish strong working relationships – preferably with government, funders, charitable organizations, service providers, community groups and the TV & Film production industry.
  • Ability to lead and inspire a team and manage staff in an environment free from harassment or bullying.
  • Commitment to equity of access and opportunity, cultivating an inclusive and representative organization.
Required experiences:
  • 5+ years working in a senior role/(s) at a not profit or charitable organization leading systems change.
  • Practical knowledge and expertise managing daily operations including fund development, staff management, strategic planning, and sector stakeholder engagement
  • Build thriving, successful relationships with private and public funders, including writing grants and proposals
  • Working knowledge of financial management practices with the ability to analyze financial statements, review reports, create balanced budgets and detailed tracking sheets that can provide an accurate account of POV’s financial situation at any given time.
  • Demonstrated capacity to collaborate with diverse communities including Black, Indigenous, People of Colour, LGBTQ2S and newcomer communities and to support the delivery of culturally relevant supports and services.
